Grizzly and Orca Expedition.
The best times for grizzly bear viewing, whales, black
bears and other magnificent wildlife:
May/June:
Grizzly and black bears emerging from hibernation,
feeding on nutritious grasses, clams, crabs, barnacles and seaweed in
the river estuaries.
Bald eagles are mating, sea and shore birds are in beautiful
mating colors.
Stellar sea lions (one of the world's largest, weights up to
2200lbs) can often be seen. Otters, seals are always around.
Small pods of transient Orcas are travelling the coast, hunting
for marine mammals and fish.
June/July:
Grizzlybears mate, young are born January-March every other year.
July/August:
Young born grizzly cubs can be seen beside their mothers, bears
start feeding on ripening berries.
The world largest population of resident Orcas (killer whales)
arrives in Johnstone Strait
Black bears and cubs can be seen, wandering the rugged shore
lines in search for sea food.
Salmon arrives, getting ready for their journey up river. Salmon
serves as the major food source for the resident Orcas and sea lions.
August- October:
Ten thousands of Pacific salmon in incredible colors start travelling
up the rivers.
Grizzly bears and black bears feed on salmon, gaining as much
as 400lbs to survive their winter hibernation.
Large number of Orcas are still travelling the nutricious waters
of Johnstone Strait, feeding on salmon.
